What about a Midnight Sun challenge.
It’s out on the net now and Stephanie’s brilliant writing has mapped out for us enough of Edward’s character to accurately portray what would have happened next from his perspective.
It could run monthly until all the chapters have been adapted. It would be the ultimate fan based tribute. I mean look at what we do with video.
What do you think?

My 8th graders are so into this! I have an after school group that meets daily to work on it…it took over a week just to decide on the perfect scene…thank you from the teachers out here who appreciate opportunities for students to participate in an activity such as this while at the same time learning so much…they will do anything Twilight related!

rosemary,
you should encourage them to take up the challenge to complete midnight sun

March 3, 2009 at 9:39 am |
PG-13 or under!
March 3, 2009 at 2:40 pm |
I’m a little bit confused. So you cannot write a scene that is in the book and just switch it to Edward’s perspective. It has to be a scene that isn’t already included in Twilight?
March 3, 2009 at 4:07 pm |
Tess —
Yes, it must be a MISSING scene … but it can be from ANY of the 4 books (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse or Breaking Dawn).

March 4, 2009 at 9:57 am |
Brittany — I think that’s fine; as long as you are expanding the scene and sharing something new with us. We want you to write something that is missing from the original book(s).
March 5, 2009 at 5:30 pm |
i think i get it now… it souds like it will be really fun to write, but it will take some work going through the books just to find what exactly ISN”T already written…

Is there a limit to the length? I’m over 1000 words on my rough draft and still have a bit to go…maybe 2/3 done.
March 9, 2009 at 7:58 pm |
Hi Christie — no limit. Go nuts!
March 21, 2009 at 12:45 am |
can you submit more than one story?
March 21, 2009 at 12:47 am |
never mind. i read the instructions again.

can we enter more than one?
March 22, 2009 at 7:07 am |
Yes, you may enter more than one story.
April 2, 2009 at 5:06 pm |
Are there any hidden restrictions in the word ’scene,’ such as location or number of events?
April 2, 2009 at 7:15 pm |
Lacie — Nope, no “hidden restrictions.” But your story should be about a MISSING scene — ie, one that does not explicitly appear in any of the 4 novels.
April 3, 2009 at 4:51 pm |
Can we submit more than two stories?
April 3, 2009 at 6:12 pm |
Yes, you can submit as many stories as you like.
April 4, 2009 at 2:21 pm |
Should the story be self-contained or is it understood it might be part of a larger story? I have written a scene that is not part of the book, and I can end it at a point that would be a kind of cliff-hanger – such as the end of a chapter. But as a story standing on it’s own, that’s not really a good ending. If I continue the story out to a resolved ending, it will overlap with the book but the portion that doesn’t overlap is well over 500 words.
April 5, 2009 at 5:41 am |
oh stop dawdling, just do it already. I’m sure congratulations are on their way.
April 6, 2009 at 2:54 am |
Do we need to include a disclaimer?
April 6, 2009 at 4:57 am |
i know it has to be more than 500 words but is there a limit?
i’m just checking because mine’s already about 1500 words
April 6, 2009 at 4:38 pm |
Jacob’s Leah — a disclaimer is always a good idea, but is not required in our contest. It’s pretty much implied.
MrsEdwardCullen — no, there is no limit!

April 14, 2009 at 9:14 am |
Maria — Yes, that is totally appropriate for this challenge!

I have a question: is it copyright infringement to work from Stephenie Meyer’s novel to do this? For example, Midnight Sun was almost verbatim to Twilight in some parts, but the changes were obvious in that they were Edward’s thoughts. Is that ok for me to do? I want to know before I get too far with my idea. Thanks!
April 14, 2009 at 8:00 pm |
Hi Christina —
First of all, it is not copyright infringement if you state a disclaimer that the characters, plot, etc. are not yours and are, in fact, the property of Stephenie Meyer.
Secondly, our challenge is to write a missing scene so, unlike “Midnight Sun,” there should be nothing verbatim to any of Meyer’s novels. You’ll be writing about something that is mentioned but not shown in the books. Make sense?
Hope that helps!
April 17, 2009 at 12:45 am |
Oh my gosh…this contest is awesome! I actually spent six months of my life on my missing piece of Midnight Sun, so all I have to do is submit it. How exciting!!!
April 21, 2009 at 4:10 am |
I know the point is to write a missing scene, and I have, but my scene ends with a little bit of a conversation that is in one of the novels (thus copying some of the dialogue verbatim). Is that okay? I can end it sooner if that’s a problem.
Thanks for the help and what a great contest idea!!
April 21, 2009 at 4:43 pm |
Approximately how many entries do you think you’ll end up having?
April 22, 2009 at 12:00 am |
i sent in an entry, how do i know you got it?
April 23, 2009 at 4:26 am |
Oh no!! I just figured out that this has to NOT include anything covered in the book! It’s a good thing I decided to read some comments…only the last part of my entry is written verbatim but it is my favorite part, and in my opinion the best part. I will make a clear definition of where the missing part ends but would like to at least include it in my entry even if it’s not judged. Thanks for having this contest, I am looking forward to submitting my hard work!
April 23, 2009 at 11:05 am |
Lorri & Laura — It’s okay if part of your missing scene overlaps with a real scene from the book, just as long as the majority of your story is the missing scene.
Katie Cullen — As long as you e-mailed your entry to sara.novelnovice@comcast.net it should have gone through okay. I’d have to look through my e-mail again to double check. As a rule, we don’t reply to entries unless there’s a problem with the file attachment.

What is PG-13 exactly? Is Breaking Dawn considered PG-13?
May 13, 2009 at 9:28 pm |
Yes, BD is PG-13 … basically, we want the stories appropriate for our younger readers … so no bad swear words, nothing TOO extremely violent (BD-level is okay) and nothing explicitly sexual, etc. Make sense? Think what you’d see in a PG-13 movie … anything like that is okay. But an R rated movie is too much.
May 13, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Thanks. I wasn’t sure about the sexual content. As long as I keep it at the level of BD it should be fine, right?
(I don’t pay attention to movie ratings unless it’s a movie my son wants to watch. LOL!)
May 15, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Yes, as long as it’s equivalent to BD, it’s just fine!
May 14, 2009 at 10:56 pm |
all these stories are awesome! great job to everyone, and congrats to the winners =]
June 24, 2009 at 4:58 pm |

June 28, 2009 at 2:31 am |
Absolutely!
July 3, 2009 at 4:29 am |
That’s awesome.I love Twilight so much
July 3, 2009 at 4:31 am |
Can you write something about Renesmee before and after she was born?
July 3, 2009 at 12:45 pm |
Yes, as long as it is a MISSING scene from one of the books and follows the other rules & guidelines.
July 3, 2009 at 9:38 pm |
i live in Canada, so i know i cant be sent a prize, but can i still enter this month’s contest? or would it be kinda pointless?
July 4, 2009 at 1:55 am |
Sure, you can enter a story. If you place, we’ll just pass the prize along to the next in line.
July 4, 2009 at 2:40 pm |
