Novel Novice Twilight, Twilight Equinox & Touched by Twilight have teamed up because we have had enough with the tabloids spreading rumor and gossip about those involved with The Twilight Saga. And we’re even more fed-up with mainstream media picking up gossip & rumor, and running it as legitimate news stories without checking the facts. We want accuracy in reporting. We want media outlets that report the truth and check their facts! Responsible journalism!
We’re inviting all Twilight fans and Twilight sites to join our campaign: twilighters for truth, as we seek a return to responsible journalism.

Our inspiration came from Novel Novice Twilight’s plea to the media in July 2009:
Dear media,
Kindly stop spreading weird, bizarre, mean, fake, outrageous, cruel and utterly hurtful rumors and gossip about stars of the Twilight fandom.
It’s bad enough when the tabloids and gossip rags resort to such childish and unprofessional stunts, such as suggesting fans attacked Rob Pattinson or that he and Kristin Stewart are expecting, or that someone is suing Stephenie Meyer. But it goes too far when major, mainstream media picks up the story — without looking into it.
First of all, as a journalist I’m embarrased by this. Major news outlets (I’m looking at you MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, ABC, The New York Times, the Associated Press …) should know better than to rehash a story without checking for facts. All it takes sometimes is a simple phone call or e-mail to find out whether a story is true or not. This is basic, journalism 101 stuff here, folks. This is what we learn day one in journalism school — day one in journalism classes — day one on the job in a professional newsroom. So why are these basic, simple lessons being ignored? Are you that desperate for a story about something as popular as Twilight?
And even if the story is false (ie, no, Stephenie Meyer is not facing a lawsuit) — you can still publish a story on the subject simply to debunk the rumors and set the record straight. Check the facts. Get to the bottom of the story. And then prove yourself as a legitimate news source by publishing the facts and proving those other sources as unreliable. Not only will you attract readers or viewers by reporting on a desirable subject, but you’ll earn loyalty by reporting the truth and not perpetuating rumors. People want to know who they can rely on for the best and most truthful, honest news.
But instead, we’ve witnessed a surge of media outlets (historically reputable, respected sources) reporting stories based solely on the falsities of a gossip rumor posted somewhere on the web.
I’m always disappointed when tabloids and gossip magazines/websites report such falsities about celebrities (especially those associated with Twilight), but I’m never surprised. I expect such outlets to report gossip and fake stories. But I don’t expect respectable news organizations to follow suit.
It is unprofessional and it tarnishes your reputation as a respectable and believable source of news. How can I trust your coverage of world news, global tragedies, the state of the economy, political upheavel, elections, etc. … if I can’t even trust you to report simple entertainment industry news without screwing it up? I am embarrassed, as I said, and I’m disappointed. It makes me feel bad about working in such an industry and worried about the industry’s future. And while part of me wants to fight against this trend — another part of me wants to throw up my hands, give up and walk away — before I, too, am lumped in with these gossip-spreading organizations that pretend to report the news.
So that’s my two cents.
Please, mainstream media — stop this. Stop reporting gossip as fact. Do your jobs. Fact-check. Report the truth.
Sincerely,
A fellow journalist & a Twilight fan

Took the words right out of my mouth! i always have to laugh when i go past the tabloid stands, “Rob Dumps Kristen!” “Kristen’s Pregnant!” “Stephanie[sic] Sued!” “Drama On-Set!” i can’t believe people think that its acceptable to fabricate a story (looking at you, Life&Style!), and this goes for all articles, not just those pertaining to Twilight. We want it stopped!

I think this is wonderful. Just because someone chooses to be in the entertainment industry does not mean they should be subjected to the lies that are told and it certainly does not mean they should be subjected to be physically attacked. They are first and foremost human beings and should be treated that way. I applaud this website for taking a stand.
Thank you for doing this.

[...] Novel Novice Twilight has teamed up with Twilight Equinox and Touched by Twilight to start something called “Twilighters For Truth.” Basically it’s a call to the media to let them know that Twilight fans and the cast/crew of the movie do not appreciate tabloids starting nasty rumors and posting fake articles. Check out more here! [...]

This is Wonderful!!!!
It’s quite refreshing to see someone taking a stand against imaginative reporting. People who write works of fiction have got to stop calling themselves journalists! It makes me even angrier to see that editors for these new organizations are allowing such flights of fancy to be published. If editors for school papers can check facts and verify sources, why can’t professionals?

Finally ! I’ve been complaining about this for a long time now . I’m so fed up with all theese BS rumors !
I feel sad for (for an example) rob and kristen who have to put up with this . like the latest rumor that kristen is pregnant with his baby . i ean COME ON people . those who write that shit should pull their head out of their ass and start writing about things that matter and the ppl who fall for this crap should get serious help .
im sorry for the “strong” language but i’m really really fed up that’s all .

I absolutely agree! I dream of one day becoming a journalist, but when I see rumors and gossip about the Twilight cast (it’s their life, they should have the freedom to do what they want with it!) I have second thoughts about pursuing that career. These are people who are bringing our favorite characters to life and the way they get treated by gossip magazines is ridiculous. But even more infuriating is that a “respectable and believable source of news” would stoop so low as to report gossip and rumors without looking into it. I’m glad someone is doing this! Thank you!

Um.. I’m all for the stop of BS rumors and everything, but people saw Rob get hit with that taxi when fans chased him… that wasn’t a lie. Fans did attack him.
Sometimes bad thins happen and they are related to Twilight.
So I agree with the stop of gossip, but you have to accept the bad truth with the good.
And that is all for my input.
July 29, 2009 at 3:48 pm |
Reports of Rob Pattinson being “hit” by a taxi were largely exaggerated, so much so that the studio had to release a statement clarifying the situation. Despite this, many news outlets ran the original story — without clarifying the situation.
We understand there will be bad, negative, etc. news associated with the fandom — as with any franchise. All we’re asking for is honest, legitimate news & responsible journalism & reporting. Fact-checking is key.
